Hooray! My Cintiq has been returned to me, just two weeks after it was shipped out. It’s as good as new! Now to get back to work. I tried messing around with my pencils and markers, but didn’t come up with anything worth posting, although I managed to at least keep up with a little bit of doodling.

My beloved Cintiq has been sent to the shop. Over the last few months, it developed an odd shadowing effect that was starting to get really distracting and annoying. After trying to work it out through emails with the tech crew, it was finally decided that whatever was wrong with it was not something we could fix, and so off to WA it goes.

So now that leaves me with one less tool, but many others to play with that I’ve neglected lately, mainly real pens and markers.

I also still have my Intuos 3. I don’t really intend to do a lot of lineart type stuff with it, but should be fine for coloring. To test that, I pulled out an old pic of Dezzia that I had doodled when I first got my batch of Copic markers. This had been done in all grey tones, so I pulled it into Painter and had some fun. A lot of fun, actually. I may give this treatment to a few other pics.

So I wanted to practice some more inking. I didn’t really feel like coming up with an idea entirely from scratch. So I dug through some old stuff, found something I always rather liked but never really got back to, and decided to go for it.

This was the original image, posted in November ‘07, but squinting at my sig, it looks as though I actually doodled it in August ‘07. So, three years later, this is how I’ve managed to clean it up.

I think this is one of my first before/after/look at a few years of progress images, and I’m actually pretty happy to see it. Even when I started inking this a week or two ago, I didn’t think I’d put so much effort into it. I picked up a book called “The Grammar of Architecture” from the sale books section of Barnes and Nobles last month, and it gave me a good amount of inspiration for the window (which started out much more blah), and even some of the bg elements.

I still have a long way to go (I’m still very shy of using big blocks of black for instance), but I’m having fun getting there, and taking a break to look back to see how far I’ve come was nice.

This is Vale and her sister, Virosia, from my original story concept, Astray. The original sketch was doodled in Painter, and the inked version was done in Manga Studio 4 EX. I cannot say it enough, I think I am in love with MS4EX.

Silly Doctor Who comic #1, colored (finally).

I think Paul Mounts is my favorite digital colorist right now. If I had realized he’d be at C2E2, I would’ve brought along something to have him sign, along with Amanda Connor. Unfortunately, I must’ve missed seeing his name on the list, and only realized he was there when I saw his name tag. Bummer. Anyway, I tried a few ideas I got from staring at his stuff on the second page.

Colored version of page 1. Probably would’ve kept playing around with it, but I had to get it done so I could move on to page 2, and get that done. XD

I changed the title block at the top. Now it’s boring, but I wasn’t too happy with the previous look. I’ll think up something more clever later, or at least for the next comic.

Had a good time with the comic book-style coloring, and also with playing around with a few different ideas here Page 2 should be even more fun (especially because I like how the Doctor turned out on p2 more).

Honestly, it felt like I spent the majority of the time on that scarf. I know that’s not true, but it took longer than I had expected!

There, we go.. page 2! Some parts of this felt like they went faster than the first page.

I’m much happier with the final panel of Amy. I think I got a little carried away with her hair and made it maybe a tad too poofy, but it still works much better than the original pic. I like how the expression turned out considering (once again) the original rough was a lot more cartoony.

This was so much fun!

Original line art done in Manga Studio (roughs done in Painter), then brought into Painter for coloring.

I prefer Eleven’s blue tie and shirt combo to his red one. Just sayin’.

Second page of my Manga Studio practice attempt/dorky Who comic thingie.

Leela is one of my favorite companions. She rocked. I can’t even remember why I thought it’d be funny to put Amy in her outfit. But there you go.

For the record, Matt Smith appears to have a ginormous skull and really tricky facial features. Those three little panels in the middle are the main reason this took so long. and now they’re shrunk way down. XD I may upload larger sizes of them later, as I finally ended up being fairly happy with them. Multi-panel reactions are not easy! I guess I could’ve just copy/pasted and edited but uhm.. well I no so smrt I guess.

Ammo’s Art Presents: A dorky Doctor Who comic! Tremble!

I’ll admit, this was as much a continuation of my learning experience in comic-style art and lettering in Manga Studio. So may as well amuse myself along the way!

It started out a bit cartoonier, as most my roughs seem to, but I ended up going a little more realistic on the Doctor than I think I had originally planned. Also I had forgotten that Amy ended with her hair pulled up during The Beast Below, so I had to make some quick alterations!

Second page to be completed.. uh, sometime? With work and whatnot, this page took me a month (I think?). And I’ve barely begun inking the second. Oops. At least it should go faster now that I’ve had some practice!

What will Amy find in the trunk? (yes, it’s probably bigger on the inside.) Yeah it’s … pretty silly. And cheesy. But fun practice! I may even put some color on it someday.

Doctor Who - Trust

Amy, you need to start trusting me. It’s never been more important.
But you don’t always tell me the truth.
If I always told you the truth, I wouldn’t need you to trust me.

Just something quick to do .. well, something. I’ve had little ideas for quick sketchie pics for each episode. Whether or not I do them all.. anyway, this one obviously would be for “Flesh and Stone”.

Did the rough pencils last week, then did the very sketchy colory-stuff tonight in about an hour. It’s pretty close to the mood I wanted, even if it was rushed.

I forgot to upload this during my vacation.. this was the first pic I did that week. Again, I used Manga Studio and it went soooo fast. I’m becoming very spoiled by that program.

Anyway, I keep saying I want to do a really, really good pic of Wondy, who I admired as a nerdy child. I wanted to do something with a very “traditional” comic-booky sort of feel, maybe a hint of Perez-homage in there. I wasn’t sure how I was going to pull off the big curly hair, but once I started it just kind of kept going. Lots of fun

Finished the inked art of Renji Abarai from Bleach. Yup. It’s late, I’m tired. Not much else to say right now. This was a lot of fun to do, Serious (but not too serious) Renji = cool.

Manga Studio’s excellently powerful and easy-to-use free transform tool is a Godsend, btw. I would probably have given up on Zabimaru days ago, and left this unfinished

Gunnerkrigg Court – Annie and Reynardine

Sorta-quickie-ish fanart from my new favorite webcomic, Gunnerkrigg Court.

This was a paint-up of a doodle I started last night on my iPod Touch. I was going to work it up on there some more, but decided to send it over and finish it in Painter (I’ll probably upload the Touch version into my scraps later). I kept pretty much all of the colors I used for the rough layout from the Touch, so it looks a bit different from my “usual” stuff, which I like. I’m trying to improve my painterly art. I liked the soft moody look, so I tried not to overwork it.
